She held on to that one word as they dragged her forcibly outside, as they chained her, as they left her alone save for a single guard. Samsey. An island, judging by that -ey at the end of the name, but beyond that she knew nothing.

First things first, though. If she didn’t manage to escape, she wouldn’t even get a chance to find Samsey. Hervor wrapped her manacled arms around herself to hold in what warmth she could and tried to come up with an escape plan.

Instead, all she could see was Orvar’s contemptuous eyes, Auðleif’s hand closing on the axe, Bjarmar’s shattered face.

So much work, so much pain, so many lies, to gain the answers she needed. It was too unfair, that she should make it this far only to be tripped up by a random warrior who’d followed Storleik for a while. Just long enough to be at the wrong wedding.

Bolvereik laughs while you kill, that old witch had said. What she’d left out was, Bolvereik also laughs while you die.

Hervor could hear the god laughing now, while she crouched on the ground, awake and heartsore, through the long, cold autumn night.
